Who was on site

Larry, Doug, Roy, Emily and Vince Tyler from Muskoka Air, Union Gas, McKenzie Aluminum and Vinyl.

What Happened

We are complete with everything, which makes us ready for our occupancy inspection first thing this week and then the big clean can happen. The furnace and gas hook ups were successful on Friday. Mike McKenzie’s guys installed the eavestrough on Friday.

What next

We will be painting the remaining basement floors on our way out, as well, the carpet stair runner will be installed Tuesday. We are having our occupancy inspection Tuesday, as well, then DONE (till grading the site in the spring).

Still Needed

The occupancy permit. Sump pump will be going in Friday, or Monday.

We will still need to do our final site grading and topsoil and seed in the spring.

Why have you chosen to apply for a Habitat for Humanity House?

We chose to apply for a Habitat for Humanity house for three reasons….

1/ We had heard so many wonderful things about being a partner family with Habitat Muskoka.

2/ We were growing increasingly scared, frustrated and upset by our current living conditions.

3/ Opportunity – They were advertising the new build in Muskoka and were accepting applications so we decided to take a chance and apply.

What have been the unexpected joys of this experience ?

Tom : The unexpected joys of this experience for me have all centered around my volunteering with Habitat for Humanity as the Social Media Volunteer. When I started off I was “just going to put in my sweat hours and then I’m done!” Well, that QUICKLY changed into “I want to DO MORE than just put in my sweat hours, how else can I help?” I am very passionate about the work I do for Habitat and I believe so strongly in what they do that I made a long term commitment to volunteer with this organization and help to make the dream of home ownership possible for many future families.

Another unexpected joy for me has been seeing how involved my 6 year old daughter Makenna was in the build process and how passionate she is about the organization as well. She has decorated a bird house for a Habitat fundraising event, baked cookies and other goodies for the volunteers at the build site, she came with us to help paint some trim a few weeks ago…she even proudly wears her Habitat Muskoka volunteer ball cap and t-shirt every chance she gets! To this day she still asks Jenn and I on an almost daily basis “Can I please do something else for Habitat?”

“Can we bake more cookies for the builders today Daddy?”

“Mommy, can we go and visit the volunteers today and say HI?”

Jenn : The unexpected joys of this experience for me has been to help with organizing the food for all the volunteers to ensure that they get to eat some yummy food . Another amazing joy was to meet all the wonderful volunteers working on our house and to see their dedication and joy on their faces and to get to talk to them when I would come on the build site. As Tom said also to see the joy in our daughter face and voice when she would talk about Habitat and wanting to always do something for the volunteers ! Just being able to make a connection and make friends with everyone at Habitat for Humanity is a true JOY

What have been the challenges?

Tom : For me, the challenges have been working through my disability to be able to fulfill my sweat hour requirement. Thankfully due to the amazingly supportive staff of Habitat Muskoka, I have been able to contribute in many meaningful ways while still logging the required hours. The staff chose to look at my unique health challenges and found a way to work with my strengths rather than focus on my weaknesses. When I walk in to the ReStore or the Habitat for Humanity Muskoka offices I have always been treated with dignity and respect which is something that I am so thankful for and to me speaks volumes about what a classy organization Habitat Muskoka is.

Jenn : The challenges for me were being pregnant when the process started and trying to work as many hours at my 2 call-in jobs to be able to qualify for my unemployment, taking our daughter to her numerous appointments along with my appointments for my pregnancy. Then, when our son was born he had 2 hospital admissions as he had been fairly sick. All the while worrying how am I going to be able to do my part of the sweat hours. This is what warmed my heart about how amazing the people are at Habitat for Humanity are because they worked with me to find ways for me to be able to obtain my portion of the hours.

What will owning a home mean for your family?

Wow, I’m not sure I can even put in to words how much of a positive, life changing effect having a safe, affordable home will mean to our family! It will mean the achievement of a dream for Jennifer and I, the dream of having a home where our kids can be safe and healthy, an environment where everyone can heal, grow and prosper. After living in substandard housing for so long, we eagerly anticipate the safety and security that a new Habitat Muskoka home will provide us.

What does “a hand up, not a hand out” mean to you?

What it means to us is that we weren’t just given a house, we were afforded an opportunity to own a home! This isn’t Extreme Makeover: Home Edition…we worked hard to be able to contribute to the building of our home and the feeling of pride that comes with not only building but paying for our own house is tremendous!

Why have you chosen to apply for a Habitat for Humanity House?

One day in the winter of 2010, I was at my volunteer job as a tutor at the Literacy Society of Muskoka. On the bulletin board was a HFH poster, calling for applicants. I liked the logo, so I read and copied the phone number, and later requested an application.

After receiving it, I filled it out and submitted.

Three months later, I received a phone call from Habitat requesting a home visit. I was surprised and very happy to learn that we had been selected as a partner family.

I have learned so much from my experience with Habitat.

What have been the challenges?

Everyone's challenges are different, and the ones that I experienced were juggling my regular job and present home/child care with my required 500 sweat equity hours.

What have been the unexpected joys of this experience ?
The volunteers involved with my build are more than that to me. They are friends, and I am so grateful to them and for them.

Now that our house is nearly complete it is with mixed emotions in knowing that I will not
see everyone as much as I am accustomed to.

What will owning a home mean for your family?

Owning my own house is like having a living legacy. It gives security, pride and a sense of belonging in a charming community.

What does “a hand up, not a hand out” mean to you?

Some people think that Habitat for Humanity builds the house, and then gives the house to the recipients. I tell them this is not the case, and is by no means a hand out. I have a mortgage like any other homeowner. The difference of course was being present and fully participating with the build from start to finish, which I see as a huge advantage that I will always remember.

What Happened

We are nearing completion with most everything. The closet shelves and knobs were completed last week; the tile on the stair landings was laid and grouted. The furnace and HRV are ready for the gas company to come and turn on the gas and of course we are near complete on the final painting. Which makes us ready for our occupancy inspection first thing next week and then the big clean can happen.

What Happened

We are nearing completion with many things, the closet doors are being hung, the toilets and sinks are installed as well as our water heat recovery units, Larry cut the counter tops with confidence for the sinks. Much door painting continues, clean up was done, as we had a considerable amount of cardboard building up. The light fixtures went in unit 519. The water is now on in both units with both bathrooms and kit sinks working, lot’s of nail hole filling and paint paint paint.

What next

More paint (details, details), closet shelves, furnace hook up to gas.

Still Needed

The carpet runner for the stairs will be done on our way out the door at the end, occupancy permits.

Habitat for Humanity Muskoka Revs Up to Open a New Huntsville ReStore

Thanks to a $119,200 Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant

Huntsville, Ontario (January 23, 2012): Thanks to a $119,200 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), Habitat for Humanity Muskoka announced today the upcoming opening of their second ReStore. MPP for Parry Sound – Muskoka Norm Miller and Huntsville Mayor Claude Doughty joined OTF representative Glenda Davies and Linda Acton-Riddle Board President Habitat for Humanity Muskoka to announce the grant.

“We opened our first ReStore at the south end of Bracebridge in 2006 and it has been successful beyond our dreams. Now we’re thrilled to open our second ReStore in Huntsville in the spring of this year,” said Board President Linda Acton-Riddle. “With over 13,000 square feet and a great location on Crescent Road, we think the Huntsville ReStore is going to be a favourite destination for Muskokans in the Huntsville and surrounding areas.”Acton-Riddle went on to say, “A 2006 grant from OTF in was instrumental in the establishment of our first Bracebridge ReStore and now the Foundation has stepped up to the plate again.”

About the Habitat for Humanity Muskoka ReStore

Proceeds from store sales support Habitat’s goal of building affordable homes for low income families. Products that might otherwise needlessly end up in landfills are purchased by builders, contractors and the general public.

“You never know what you’ll find in our store...there is something for everyone, from gently loved furnishings to building materials and even that one-of-a-kind treasure you’ve been searching for,” said Retail Operations Manager, Kevin Manley.

The ReStore concept benefits both the wholesalers, retailers and individuals who donate products to be sold, as well as the consumers who purchase those products at a reduced cost.

Staffed mainly by volunteers, the Habitat Muskoka ReStore also works closely with the District of Muskoka and other community organizations and schools to provide leaning and work-place experience.

“When the first ReStore opened in Bracebridge, I remember how impressed I was with the concept. This latest grant will assist Habitat for Humanity Muskoka in their goal of helping to build affordable homes for families in Muskoka said Norm Miller, MPP for Parry Sound – Muskoka.”

About Habitat for Humanity Muskoka

Habitat for Humanity Muskoka was established as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada in 2002. Our first home was built in 2003. Since 2003, twelve homes have now been built by Habitat for Humanity Muskoka for families across Muskoka who may not otherwise be able to experience the joys and responsibilities of home ownership.

Through volunteer labour, efficient management and donations of money and materials, Habitat homes are built and sold to partner families at no profit. They are financed with affordable, no interest mortgages, geared to the families' financial circumstances.

Habitat for Humanity is not a give-away program. In addition to the mortgage payments, each homeowner contributes 500 hours of unpaid labour into the building of their home and other homes. This is called "Sweat Equity". Sweat equity increase pride of ownership and reduces Habitat's costs.

Without the passion and action of our Habitat for Humanity Muskoka volunteers, none of this would be possible. It is with thanks and enormous gratitude that Habitat for Humanity Muskoka recognizes the impact volunteers have on the work we do.

A bright future for home building projects through Habitat for Humanity Muskoka and further north.....

Plans are already under way for a construction start of our 13th and 14th homes in spring 2012 in Huntsville, and through an Adopt-A-Home partner agreement with a group of dedicated volunteers in Parry Sound two homes are also slated for the Town of Parry Sound construction in 2012/2013.

What Happened

We received our doors yesterday and Larry jumped right in to hanging them.

The stairs were prepped for paint in preparation for the carpet runner.

Roy painted more window frames and Emily had a lesson in door painting.

Jack the lino installer came and installed the lino in the front hall and bathroom.

What next

The HRV units will be delivered this week the flooring guy is planned for first thing next week After the Lino goes down we can install bath vanities and toilets (good bye cold seat).

Still Needed

The closet shelves may be covered in the Home Depot grant. The attic access holes need to be finished. We also need to get toilets and bath room sinks and the light fixtures.

The underlay plywood was installed in 517 for the linoleum and now 519. More trim went on and more paint was splashed around. Emily did some great clean up, which was overdue from the holiday work done.

What next
The doors are still unaccounted for as we are waiting on a price from Simcoe Block still.
The HRV units will be delivered this week the flooring guy is planned for first thing next week.

The closet shelves may be covered in the Home Depot grant, awesome, the attic access holes need to be finished. With any luck we should hear from Simcoe Block about our door order Thursday. We also need to get toilets and bath room sinks. We are shopping for best price on a new trimming mitre saw.

We had a new gentleman show up yesterday, Bob. He stayed long enough to drop off some tools and then was called away. We look forward to his return. Tyler from Muskoka Air was on site as well.

What Happened

The Kitchen Crew was on site over the holiday and installed not one but both kitchens, counter tops still to come. Larry, the man who can’t sit still for long, did some more trim over the time off as well as some Monday.

What next
Doors and trim then more doors and trim. The Home Depot community grant program is supplying our complete door knobs inside and out, as well as some extra money for odds and ends (maybe closet shelving). THANK YOU Chris (Team Depot Member).

Who was on site

The gas guys were there drilling under the road. Steve, the Greensides guy, was there sparking up 517.

What Happened
The siding team is nearly finished the front gable. The laminate floor in 519 is done. The colours are going on in 517 (two coats now) A gentleman named Dave started installing our closet door frames in 519. The trim for 517 is mostly painted. Basement bedroom floor base started in 517. Larry snuck in on Saturday and started the baseboard in 519. The flooring is near finished in 517 main floor.

What next

Window returns now on site baseboard now on site. Window return plywood was ripped at Muskoka Custom Cabinets. THANK YOU. The Home Depot community grant program is supplying our complete door knobs inside and out, as well as some extra money for odds and ends maybe closet shelving. THANK YOU Chris (Team Depot Member/volunteer on our site).

Who was on site
Larry, Doug, Ken, Dave, Dorothy, Roy and Vince , as well Darren and Brian from Muskoka Exteriors. The gas guys were there drilling under the road. Greensides guy was there sparking up 517.

What Happened
The siding team is nearly finished the front gable. The laminate floor in 519 is done. The colours are going on in 517 (two coats now). A gentleman named Dave started installing our closet door frames in 519. They started painting the trim for 517. Basement bedroom floor base started in 517. Larry snuck in on Saturday and started the baseboard in 519. The flooring is started in 517 main floor.

What next
Doors and trim then more doors and trim.
Window returns now on site baseboard now on site. Window return plywood was ripped at Muskoka Custom Cabinets. [Editor's Note: Emily did some research for me! The Window Returns are the wood between the windows and the drywall!]

Still Needed
The closet shelves may be covered in the Home Depot grant awesome. The window return material will be picked up tomorrow barring rain.

Full on Mudding and Taping should be complete late this week and off to priming.

We now have casing on site window returns and door frames on site shortly baseboard now on site. The flooring should get started in 519 Monday or Tuesday.

Vince shows 'em what to do!

Who was on site
Larry, Doug, Dorothy, Marj, Jesse, Bert, Chris, Emily, Roy and Vince (Project Manager –reporting).

We had Darren and Brian from Muskoka Exteriors (siding) AND a great group of young adults from the Katimavik program: Justin, Brandon, Jessica, Connor, Cynthia, Nick, Chloe, Alexa and Nadege.

What Happened

The siding team made some great head way The Katimavik gang did a great job, through Roy’s tutledge, they primed the whole main floor of one side Bert and Chris worked with the siding team Larry Dorothy and Marj worked on some finicky jobs in the basement.
Emily and Marj did the never ending tidy up job.
Wow! What a day my thanks to all.

What next
Full on Mudding and Taping should be complete early next week and off to priming.
We now have the siding on site, trims and corners are started and siding is going on.

Paint colours are picked and will be ordered tomorrow.

The Finish paint is to be ordered. The window returns material and trim will be brought on site. The door jambs will be picked up next week.

The drywall taping has stalled out as our volunteers have reached the limit of their skill set and admirably admitted by them. With today’s inspection of the taping by two different professionals, we have concluded we need professional help to complete the taping and mudding. This will give us a finish product we can all be proud of and happy to paint.

Larry worked some more drywall magic in the stairwells with Steve and Dorothy’s help Muskoka Exteriors got a good start on our flashings and trims for the siding Jesse continued his mudding and taping magic. Doug and Alex finished the front stair rails.

The drywall taping is progressing well, with careful expectations of completion (main floor) this week. Quite the first snow fall, most of Gravenhurst was without power. This did not include our site. The lads from Beaver Creek made sure we had cleared walkways to all entrance doors.

What Happened
The drywall is progressing well, the boarding is nearing completion and full taping is under way.
Today as well our last shipment of drywall came. Many thanks to those who moved it all.

What next
A bit more and the main floor will be boarded completely, the taping is progressing well, thank you Jesse for continuing the taping and mudding clinic.
Sound proofing of the fire/party wall between units. We have tracked down the illusive “party wall” sound proof insulation, it’s going in Tuesday. Yay!

It's been cooler and even though there the house is closed in, there isn’t any heat yet, so its chilly!

LOCAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT CELEBRATES

$1,500 DONATION from the Muskoka Community Foundation

Gravenhurst, ON October 19. 2011: Ellen Frood, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Muskoka and Linda Acton-Riddle, Board President, were honoured to accept a gift of $1,500 from the Muskoka Community Foundation today. Steve Hayhurst and Gord Durnan Muskoka Community Foundation Board members were at the site of the Gravenhurst Habitat homes under construction on Muskoka Beach Road to present the cheque which was made possible through the Lowden Family Fund.

About the Muskoka Community Foundation….

The Muskoka Community Foundation was formed in 2007 to connect donors to community needs throughout the District. By building endowment funds, they ensure funding stability for the future and create a lasting legacy for donors. Last year, 170 community foundations across Canada granted over $140 million to local priorities.

The Lowden Family Fund was formed last year by long-time seasonal residents, Steve and Linda Lowden, in recognition of their affinity for Muskoka and commitment to endowed giving. This year marks the first distribution from the Fund. A total of $5000 has been granted to five not-for-profits in Muskoka including $1500 to Habitat for Humanity Muskoka.

This gift will be directed toward the purchase of construction supplies for the 2011 Gravenhurst build which is slated to be complete late 2011. “We could not complete our builds without cash gifts of this nature”, said Habitat Board President, Linda Acton-Riddle.

Acton-Riddle reiterated Habitat for Humanity Muskoka’s intention to house two new families this year. “We invite anyone interested in supervising, hands-on learning, teamwork and supporting a great charity to volunteer. Join us as we work to give a hand up, not a hand out to two families through our affordable home ownership program.”

A bright future for home building projects through Habitat for Humanity Muskoka and further north…..

Habitat for Humanity Muskoka has built 10 homes across Muskoka since 2003. The Gravenhurst homes are 11 and 12 and plans are already under way to build two homes in Huntsville in 2012. Next year, the not-for-profit is also planning for the construction of two homes in Parry Sound through an Adopt-A-Home project and partnership with a very dedicated group of volunteers from Parry Sound.

Giving back to the community is a core value of Habitat for Humanity Muskoka. Through community programs, Habitat brings volunteerism, do-it-yourself expertise, product donations and monetary grants to help meet the critical needs of low income families. This would not be possible without support from community groups such as the Muskoka Community Foundation and the thoughtful gift direction of endowed fund holders such as the Lowdens.

Plans changed quickly this morning with a call from a cement floor contractor who had the time today to donate his and his crew’s time for help with our remaining concrete work. We graciously accepted. As well the troop worked diligently on the ceilings and final tub framing and sudden cement prep.

Vapour barrier and Insulation started on the main floor ceilings.
Kitchen orders will be nailed down soon (no pun intended).

The troop started doing Vapour Barrier of the main floor ceiling in advance of drywall.
The tubs arrived during morning coffee and some special sawzall work took place to get them in the bathrooms, thanks gang.
The team from Great Northern Insulation applied the spray foam yesterday afternoon and must have pulled a late shift, many thanks Bill Gee and workers.

What next

What Happened
Many small tasks (small in size) large in importance were taken care of. Larry and Fred continued with the side door extravaganza, such determination good work fellas. From yesterday’s hydro inspection => we PASSED, soon to be powered up, yeah.

What next
Bill Gee and the spray foam guys are scheduled in for Tues. Afternoon. We will work a morning shift with the odd jobs, but no one need be around while the spray foam is going on, nasty fumes and residual spray in the air.

Still Needed
We have yet to line up one piece tub units and will need real soon.
Sump pumps as well.

Who was on site
LARRY, ALEX, EMILY, VINCE (site manager) and Dave and Steve from Greensides Electrical.
And a visit from Muskoka Cabinets re: kitchens.

What Happened
Larry diligently worked on the side door openings in order to make them work for the doors. Alex, the keenest to learn guy I have met, worked away on making sure the exterior strapping was ready for siding. Ever-faithful Emily was there keeping us tidied. Dave and Steve arrived around 2:30 to wait out the electrical inspector. As well the foam (insulation) guys were going to get a start around 3:00 ish. The fellows from Gravenhurst Plumbing and Heating came by and installed the outside spigots.

What next
Hopefully we passed our inspection and we can move forward with the rest of the insulation. Soon we can vapour barrier the main floor ceiling and do the nasty 5/8 dry wall ceiling.

Still Needed
The HRV guys should be starting Thursday. The kitchen quotes are moving along. The siding troop is close to starting.

Volunteers
We are still in a holding pattern while waiting for inspections, volunteers will be notified as we pick up speed again. Which as of today inspection), look out Tuesday.

Further down the road
Drywall taping in a few weeks, with luck and determination. The start of the siding on the exterior.

My thoughts
I truly cannot say enough about Larry and his dogged determination for things to be done right and to move forward, THANX Larry. Alex and Emily worked away with the determination to make things move forward, again Thanx. Dave and Steve came through to meet the inspector. I believe we are getting back up to the pace previously set. (Risky statement, I know)

What Happened
Super Fred and Larry the Machine worked on completing the two gable ends. Of course they utilized our awesome new ladder and the fall arrest kit. Emily tidied areas of the build and assisted myself with a project in the basement. Spoke with the HVAC fellow and is ready to get going on Thursday, the insulation guys will not be in his way.

Bill Gee from Great Northern insulation came by for a scheduling update, would like to start Wednesday.

What next?
Tomorrow, Wednesday, we are hoping for our electrical inspection. If (when) we get passed, the insulation guy’s are itching to start. As well some minor jobs will be completed from the to do list.

Still Needed
Lots of things, details will follow, post inspections.

My apologies for no reports as of late, this techno peasant is still getting up to speed with this report thing. Getting up to speed with where we are at, and what is lined up and who is doing what. As Mike has previously stated we have an awesome group of very dedicated volunteers.

Home Depot raises over $2000 for Habitat Muskoka!

On Saturday September 24^th Habitat was invited to participate in a community day being hosted by Home Depot. The Home Depot in Bracebridge raised in excess of $2000 in support of Habitat Muskoka in their paper hammer campaign and the Home Depot in Huntsville raised over $4000 and Home Depot Parry Sound raised over $700. All dollars raised through the paper hammer campaign are directed to build programs across Muskoka and Parry Sound

Habitat sends a huge thank you to all who participated. Special thanks goes to the staff of all the stores for all they do and thanks also to Home Depot for their donations of extra product.

With great excitement our windows were installed last Saturday. Coming out to help for the second year in a row.

We packed all of the Drywall into the houses. Marjie and Dorothy began trimming the Dimple-wrap (that weird looking stuff that goes around the foundation) and fastening the top to the strapping.
The Plumbing Inspection passed!

My Thoughts
The really great news today came from Bill Gee at Great Northern Insulation that his supplier, BASF,
would donate the Spray Foam Insulation (SFI). There is no better way to insulate a house than with SFI.
It seals up every possible air leak, and does not allow moisture to pass through it. No air movement = no
drafts, but no moisture in the wall means there is no dew point in the wall. The dew point is that place,
usually within the batt insulation where the hot and cold air meet and the moisture condenses. Over
time this causes the house to rot. SFI, on the other hand, puts the dew point outside the wall system.
This can potentially give the house 2 or 3 times its lifespan (usually about 50 years for a modern
constructed home).

My Thoughts
We needed about 100’ of trench @ min. 2’ deep for the electricians to run the lateral service from the
pole to the service panels. On Wednesday Rick and Steve just stepped forward and said: “You need a
trench? Then we are here to dig a trench.” And they dug about 50’ of trench. Kudos to Steve and Rick.
And kudos to all our great Volunteers.
